Worship Confessional 10.07.07

Ok, … Did you ever get up to lead worship and find out that the power point screen was blank?
There I was, leading the second song and the pastor is waving his arms at me and pointing at the screen, eyes popping, mouthing, “NO WORDS!, NO WORDS!” Now, this isn’t the first time we had trouble with the power point. And, most of the time it’s been Worshipleader Prep-Disease. (WPD)
I get afflicted with WPD every once in a while. You know the deal, sometimes the brain malfunctions and what you thought you added to the set list was not what you got. You practiced to do, Amazing Grace, and the actual song you added to the set was Grace Like Rain. Then you find out after service that the lyrics on the screen weren’t Amazing Grace. UGH!
You may be asking, “what did I do when I was informed that there were no words?” I did what any self-respecting worshipleader would do, I lost concentration and flubbed the chords. After re-gaining my composure, I “fed” the lyrics to the congregation so they could join in singing to the Lord.
In spite of my flubbed chords and jitters God is faithful and several folks commented on how good the ‘worship’ was. Now that I think about it, maybe that was a result of focus. Maybe, because the screen was blank the congregation had nothing to focus their eyes on. Perhaps their eyes were on Jesus.
That has me thinking…. Is our worship experience dulled by the expected? Suddenly, when the unexpected happens, are we provoked to look for something secure to rest on?.. lean on? Change is good, provided it moves us toward God. And so, the unexpected made room for a greater depth of worship experience and God used the unexpected to meet His people.
